Booking commission: what booking platforms really cost
Work out what booking platform commission costs you per year and compare it with your own booking system at a fixed price.
Booking platforms often look cheap: a small monthly fee and "only" a few percent on new clients. But it's worth doing the maths.
A simple calculation
Say you have 300 visits a month at an average of €35. If a platform takes 5–10% on part of the bookings plus a monthly fee, over a year that adds up to anything from a few hundred to a few thousand euros. And the amount grows with your business — the more clients, the more you pay.
The hidden cost: sharing your clients
On a marketplace your client also sees other businesses. Next time they may book with a competitor running a promotion that week. You pay for a client the platform may later send elsewhere.
Your own system: what's different
- A fixed price — independent of the number of visits.
- Booking on your website and domain.
- The client base belongs to you.
- Emails to clients are sent in your name.
When a platform still makes sense
If you're just starting and have no clients yet, a platform can help you get noticed. But once you have regulars, your own system usually pays for itself within the first year.
